CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape government has closed down several taxi routes, amidst ongoing violence in the province.
A dispute over the route from Khayelitsha to Somerset West is at the heart of the conflict.
The provincial government met with taxi operators about the Route M18 to Somerset West and related routes

Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku said, "Following careful consideration, the Western Cape government has resolved to invoke section 91 (1) of the National Land Transport Act."
"This empowers us to impose extraordinary measures in areas where violence and instability in the public transport sector has placed lives at risk."
"From Wednesday 17 September 2025, some taxi routes will be closed for a period of 30 days...taxi ranks in Khayelitsha, eMfuleni...will also be closed."
