UPDATE | War recruitment case postponed

JOHANNESBURG - Five suspects charged with contravening the Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act appeared in the Kempton Park magistrate's court on Monday.

The case has been postponed to 8 December for a formal bail application.

Nonkululeko Mantula, Thulani Mazibuko (24), Xolani Ntuli (46), Siphamandla Tshabalala (23) and Sifiso Mabena (21) appeared in the dock.

The suspects were arrested after a tip-off to the Hawks by police at OR Tambo International Airport.

Officers removed the men from a flight headed to Russia via the UAE and flagged their travel as suspicious.

It’s believed a South African woman facilitated the recruitment and travel of the group to join the Russian Federation military.

Authorities are working with intelligence partners, both locally and internationally, to determine the scope of the network and any potential security threats.
