We were ambushed by police - Brown Mogotsi's lawyers

JOHANNESBURG - Brown Mogotsi's legal team felt ambushed by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Makau William Sekgatja, from Radasi Sekgatja Inc, said they were not aware that Brown would be arrested.

Mogotsi was arrested on Friday evening for allegedly staging an assassination attempt in Vosloorus.

The arrest was executed by an SAPS multidisciplinary team soon after he had concluded his testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Speaking to eNCA, Mogotsi’s legal representative said this arrest took them by surprise.

“We were never alerted to this particular arrest.  We have always been available to bring our client before the members of the police station in the event that they needed to arrest him or they needed him in relation to any investigation.

“But we were very much surprised. After we left the Commission, we saw on Twitter that our client had been arrested, and we had no details in relation to that,” he said.

In November 2025, Mogotsi alleged that he had been attacked in Vosloorus.

He claimed to have escaped unscathed after a hail of bullets hit his car.

But a witness who spoke to eNCA at the time insisted that Mogotsi is the one who shot at his own car.

But Sekgatja maintains his client's innocence.

“Our client is actually shocked that the investigation has revealed that he either attempted or defeated the ends of justice. He maintains his innocence in relation to that.”
