JOHANNESBURG - NPA’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) has now confirmed that arrest warrants were, in fact, issued against SAPS officers on Thursday.
But the unit said it had only targeted Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo and Major-General Nosipho Madondo, and no one else from the SAPS.
According to NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago, the two were contacted by IDAC investigators to present themselves at the Brooklyn police station on 18 June 2026.

But upon arrival at the station, there was a turn of events as the two officials ended up not being arrested. This caused confusion about why IDAC had aborted the arrest.
Giving clarity to the matter, Kganyago said, “Subsequent to the communication with the two officers, the IDAC received information that the affected officers were part of the Justice Crime Prevention and Security cluster team that is assigned to prepare for a national security measure before and on 30 June 2026 in relation to immigration issues.
“In the interest of ensuring synergy and efficiency in the work of that team, IDAC thus decided to suspend the execution of the warrants of arrest until the assignment of the two officers is completed.”
Ultimately, he said the two officers were subsequently contacted to no longer hand themselves over.
“Any unrelated information circulated about the arrest of other officers apart from the two is false and should be treated as such,” he said.
On Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi told eNCA that he, alongside Khumalo, received intelligence that on Wednesday that IDAC had given itself 48 hours to get the pair behind bars.

At the time, Mkhwanazi said, “I did not believe that intelligence when it came. And today, when General Khumalo called me, saying what we received yesterday is really happening, I thought I should come here," he said.
Kganyago has now come out to say that there is no investigation against Mkhwanazi, nor was there any intention to have him arrested.
He further denied claims that the unit had deceived anyone.
