AU commission | International Crisis Group unravels commission's context
ADDIS ABABA - Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has taken over as the new African Union Commission Chairperson.
Djibouti's Foreign Affairs Minister was elected during the 38th Ordinary Session of the AU Summit, held in Addis Ababa this weekend.
Youssouf steps in amid the escalation of the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, among other pressing issues.
Liesl Louw Vaudran, senior advisor at the International Crisis Group discussed the appointment and some of the other events surrounding the meeting.
Vaudran said, "it's going to be hugely challenging for him [Youssouf] because we have an escalation of the conflict in the Eastern DRC, there's also the crisis in Sudan that is the biggest humanitarian tragedy globally today."
