Coups in central, west Africa in the past few years

JOHANNESBURG - In recent years, a wave of military coups have swept across parts of Africa, particularly in the west of the continent.

This is raising concerns that the region may be reverting to the instability, that marked the early decades of independence in the 1960s and  1970s, although under different circumstances.

Countries such as Mali and Guinea in 2021, Burkina Faso in 2022, and Gabon in 2023 have all experienced military takeovers.

New reports are now emerging of attempts in Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau.

These coups appear to stem from a mix of citizen frustration with ineffective, or corrupt civilian governments, the inability of state institutions to contain jihadist insurgencies, and  leaders’ manipulation of constitutions to extend their rule.
