JOHANNESBURG - Life behind bars for kidnapping and 10 years for trafficking.

This was the sentence handed down to those responsible for the disappearance of Joshlin Smith.

The young girl went missing from her Middlepos home in Saldanha Bay in February last year.

WATCH | Government welcomes sentencing in Joshlin Smith case

Her mother, Kelly Smith, Jacquen Appollis and Steveno van Rhyn have been sentenced and will also have their names added to the national child protection register.

Child rights organisations have welcomed the sentence, but there are concerns over the implementation of systems and plans to deal with child abuse and GBV.

Activist and Wise4Afrika director Advocate Brenda Madumise-Pajibo stated that the sentencing was reasonable and communicated a message, although it took longer.
