Spam calls epidemic | Growing calls for crackdown on spam calls

JOHANNESBURG -  Spammers aren't playing by the rules, using cell numbers illegally to hide identities, making it tough to avoid calls.

The Internet Service Providers' Association is calling on regulators to crack down. Many people use apps like Truecaller to help identify spam calls.

But the Information regulator is probing complaints against the app from businesses.

Internet Service Providers' AssociationAnton Kotze says this is a global phenomenon and an exploitation by bad actors. 

According to Kotze, global research shows that the answer rates on mobile numbers are lower than a typical fixed number, including an 011 or a 021 number.
