WATCH | More trains to help reduce Richards Bay backlog

JOHANNESBURG - Transnet is implementing key measures to improve the performance of the North Corridor to de-congest the Port of Richards Bay.

It says this is part of its Recovery Plan being implemented to improve the operational and financial performance of the company.

The North Corridor handles roughly 41 percent of total Transnet Freight Rail volumes.

It generates 38 percent of TFR revenue and supports critical markets, which contributes about 3 percent of South Africa's GDP.

The Corridor, which runs from Lephalale to the Port of Richards Bay, and transports commodities such as export coal and chrome, has been on the brink of collapse -- with companies losing billions in export revenue because of the infrastructure issues.

These challenges include locomotive availability and reliability, and high levels of cable theft and infrastructure vandalism.
