End to spam calls? Consumer Commission preparing new Opt-Out Registry

JOHANNESBURG - South Africans bombarded by unwanted telemarketing calls and text messages could soon have a new way to fight back.

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) is preparing to roll out its Opt-Out Registry, a system designed to help consumers block unsolicited marketing communications.

The registry will allow consumers to create profiles and indicate that they do not want to receive unwanted direct marketing calls and messages.

But for the system to work effectively, direct marketers will also have to play their part.

The NCC says all direct marketers are expected to register on the platform to ensure compliance with the Consumer Protection Act.

NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba urged consumers to visit the Commission’s website and create their profiles ahead of the launch.

“What you need to do right now is to visit our website at the NCC. You will be able to create a profile as a consumer.”

The Commission is currently engaging with direct marketers and selected industries as part of its preparations for the launch.

Ntaba says the system is ready, with the official launch date to be announced soon.

The NCC is also calling on technology companies and other suitable partners to help make the Opt-Out Registry accessible to as many South Africans as possible.

“We want to make sure that the system is accessible to as many South Africans as possible,” Ntaba said, describing the technology partnerships as part of the Commission’s preparations for the rollout.

The NCC says direct marketers must also register on the platform for consumers to effectively opt out of unwanted communications.

“Without direct marketers in the system, it’s not going to be easy for you to opt out,” Ntaba said.
