It’s Wednesday, 1 July, and this is News Bite with Marcelle Gordon.

More than 900 people have been arrested after 30 June anti-illegal immigration protests across South Africa. Police say charges include public violence, looting, incitement and Immigration Act contraventions. In Gauteng, one person was killed in Alexandra, two were injured in Hillbrow, and in Germiston, protesters allegedly forced their way into homes.

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry says it is relieved the protests were largely peaceful. But Parliament’s Supra Mahumapelo says South Africa cannot tackle porous borders alone and wants regional action on illegal

Some Eastern Cape communities are vowing to continue protests. In Cape Town, hundreds of Zimbabwean nationals are still awaiting transport after accepting voluntary repatriation.

In court, the NPA says it cannot rely on Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s statement implicating high-ranking officers until a deal is concluded. The court rejected his proposed sentence in a plea agreement linked to a SAPS tender corruption case. The matter returns on 13 July.

The Madlanga Commission has postponed proceedings on suspended Deputy Crime Intelligence head Feroz Khan, who was shot on Sunday and remains in hospital. Khan’s legal team plans another bid for evidence to be heard in camera.

At the United Nations, the crisis in the Palestinian territories is deepening, with the Security Council told more than 1,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the so-called ceasefire last October.

In other news we’re keeping an eye on, former president Jacob Zuma has reportedly been seen in India alongside Ajay Gupta, while President Cyril Ramaphosa has reshuffled his Cabinet, replacing John Steenhuisen with Willem Aucamp.

SPORT

Kylian Mbappé and France beat Sweden 3-0 in the World Cup Round of 32. Mbappé is level with Messi on six goals, but leads the Golden Boot race through assists. France now faces Paraguay.

Thomas Tuchel says England know the challenge waiting against the DRC, while Rassie Erasmus has praised Cheslin Kolbe before his 50th Springbok Test against England.
