The Charlotte Maxeke whistleblower who raised the alarm over problems at the hospital is quitting the public service. Internal Medicine head Dr Adam Mahomed is leaving after a Public Protector report flagged delays, maladministration, poor planning and weak oversight in the hospital’s refurbishment after the 2021 fire. The report found administrative failures put patients’ lives at risk and cost taxpayers billions.
Also today, the Cabinet Security Cluster holds an urgent meeting on illegal immigration protests, xenophobia and social cohesion as South Africa marks Africa Day. Government will host its main Africa Day event in Moruleng, but reports suggest the African Ambassadors' Core may stay away over safety fears. Nomzamo Zondo from the Socio-Economic Rights Institute says South Africa appears to have forgotten that its own freedom dream was tied to the liberation of all Africans.
In the courts, the case against SAPS ballistics expert Laurence Itumeleng Makgotloe has been postponed to 2 June after police seized ballistic reports and ammunition from his home. He is accused of manipulating evidence in high-profile murder cases, including the Armand Swarts matter. SAHPRA has also shut down an illegal weight loss drug factory in Silverton, east of Pretoria, after drugs designed for diabetes management were allegedly produced illegally and used for weight loss.
We’re also watching Gaza flotilla activists speaking in Sydney after Israeli authorities detained, seized and deported them, while the NPA files leave to appeal in the Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni matter after the case was struck off the roll when prosecutor Mkhuseli Ntaba failed to appear in court.

Mamelodi Sundowns have finally claimed their second CAF Champions League star after beating Morocco’s AS FAR in Rabat, with Ronwen Williams and Miguel Cardoso celebrating a decade-long chase. Kimi Antonelli wins again at the Canadian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton lands his strongest Ferrari result yet, Laura Wolvaardt says the Proteas Women need mental toughness ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, and Cheslin Kolbe is heading back to the Stormers next season.
And finally, the second star has landed. Sundowns waited ten years for it, and the Brazilians now have a new badge of continental bragging rights.
