It’s Monday, 13 July, and this is News Bite with Marcelle Gordon.

British fugitive Ndodana Tshuma has appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court in an international triple-murder case. He is accused of killing his wife and her two daughters in the United Kingdom before flying from Heathrow. Arrested in Kensington during a joint SAPS and Interpol operation, Tshuma will first face a South African firearm charge before any extradition. The matter returns on 22 July.

The Madlanga Commission is scrutinising a medical certificate from anti-corruption head Advocate Andrea Johnson after she missed Monday’s hearing. Her lawyer said she was rushed to hospital, but the commission chair said the note gave too little information. Johnson faces allegations of interference in an assault investigation involving suspended Crime Intelligence deputy head, Feroz Khan.

Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s collapsed plea agreement has cleared the way for his fraud trial. The NPA says the deal is null and void and Matlala is expected to return as accused number one in September.

The Anele Tembe inquest has been postponed to September after a medical emergency at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court. Tembe died after falling from a Cape Town hotel in April 2021 while engaged to rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes. The matter was later referred for an inquest.

South African football is mourning Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star Jayden Adams after his body was found at a Cape Town property. Police are investigating. Tributes have poured in worldwide and mourners gathered at his family home in Idas Valley.

In other news we’re keeping an eye on, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says South Africa will not compensate Nigerian citizens repatriated after protests against undocumented migrants. Nigeria has raised claims over property left behind, but she says property rights remain protected.

Two suspects are due in court after suspected human organs and a Health Department vehicle were found in Naledi, Soweto.

SPORT

Jannik Sinner retained his Wimbledon title by beating Alexander Zverev 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4. It is the Italian top seed’s fifth Grand Slam title.

And finally, France face Spain in Tuesday’s World Cup semi-final before Argentina meet England on Wednesday. Spain have conceded only once on their way to the last four.
