DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal police have launched a manhunt following the fatal shooting of two African National Congress (ANC) members in Umgababa, south of Durban.
Three other people were injured in the attack and are recovering in hospital.
The victims were part of an ANC campaign team conducting door-to-door campaigning, accompanied by two bodyguards, when a gunman opened fire from a bakkie.
The killings have raised fresh concerns about political violence ahead of the local government elections. The incident comes just days after two ANC Youth League members were murdered in Ekurhuleni.
ANC KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Sifiso Sonjica condemned the killings, describing the attack as a serious concern for the country’s democracy.
“It’s a serious concern. The democracy we fought for is that we must fight elections using the ballot. We have seen a lot of these killings. This was brazen,” he said.
“We are a leader of the society as ANC, and we have full confidence that the police will crack this case. We generally will hope that this is not an attack to democracy itself.
“We have seen a lot of these killings, ANC members, but our view is that nobody must be killed for whatever reason.”
Police investigations are continuing as authorities work to identify and arrest those responsible.
