CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town remains firmly in the hands of the Democratic Alliance, which has secured more than 56% of the vote.
The DA took control of the municipality from the ANC in 2006. Two decades later, it has retained its outright majority.
The party made gains across several communities, including parts of the Cape Flats, while the ANC retained its support base in Khayelitsha.
In Bonteheuwel, DA councillor Angus McKenzie says efforts to tackle crime have contributed to the party’s support.
Residents in Bonteheuwel had mixed reactions to the DA retaining the area.
The DA also secured all eight wards in Mitchells Plain.
Despite the result, National Coloured Congress leader Fadiel Adams says he isn’t disappointed with his party’s performance.
In Khayelitsha, the ANC retained its dominance, although the DA made inroads.
Residents say improved service delivery remains a priority, regardless of which party governs their area.
