DURBAN - The eThekwini Municipality says Metro Police jobs are not for sale.
This follows allegations that a Metro Police official received more than R400,000 from people who were allegedly promised jobs.
According to an investigative report, 71 people were duped.
There have been allegations of a R20-million law enforcement recruitment scam. The matter was first flagged in 2019, prompting the Metro’s internal investigations unit to commission a probe.

A second report, completed in June 2026, could not verify the alleged multimillion-rand corruption. However, it found that a junior officer had allegedly received R420,000.
Metro Police Commissioner Sibonelo Mchunu says the junior officer was not part of the recruitment team.
“He was just a worker working at the park, monitoring the process and scamming people outside,” says Mchunu.
The officer was employed by Metro Police in 2024.

He has since been subjected to disciplinary and criminal processes.
The City is calling on members of the public to report any suspicious activity.
The DA, meanwhile, staged a protest outside the municipality, calling for lifestyle audits of Metro Police and senior municipal officials.
The City has promised to release the findings of the Metro Police investigation once all disciplinary processes have been completed.
