'They don't stop' | Shock over alleged sex acts at Verulam cemetery

VERULAM - Well-dressed men have been caught engaging in sexual acts at a cemetery in Verulam, much to the shock of residents and security personnel.

A security company has ramped up patrols in an effort to curb the disturbing behaviour.

However, security staff say the men appear unfazed when confronted.

Amanda Daniso says some of the men have been visiting the cemetery since early January.

"They are chased with stones and other things, but they don't stop until they are finished," she says.

"They can see that you see them. You can shout and chase them, but they don't stop until they finish, then take their stuff and leave," she adds.

Police say the incidents constitute a criminal offence.

Local security companies say they are, for now, focused on keeping the men away from the cemetery.

The eThekwini Municipality says any sexual activity at gravesites contravenes cemetery by-laws.

Residents are urged to report the incidents to police so that the matter can be investigated.
