'The trauma is still there': Tony Forbes speaks as AKA murder trial begins

DURBAN - The father of slain South African rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes says he is anxious about what will emerge in court as the murder trial gets under way at the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Durban.

“I am a bit anxious about what I will hear and see, but it is an important event for me to go through as part of closure,” Tony Forbes said.

He said he was confident that the State had built a solid case against the accused.

“I am confident that the work has been done by the team. I’d like to think that whoever is responsible will be held accountable. I’m anxious, but it is also important and I’m happy that we’re at this point.”

The seven men accused of the murders of AKA and his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane are expected to begin their trial on Monday.

They face a string of serious charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, two counts of murder, attempted murder, and firearms- and ammunition-related offences.

“The trauma is still there. It’s the first day and I am preparing myself for what could be another marathon. I don’t think it will be over quickly because it has to be done properly. It’s not going to bring Kiernan or Tibz back if it goes fast. It must be done properly,” Forbes said.

Forbes said he had not spent much time thinking about the “why” behind his son’s murder.

“It’s pointless. We’ve got to go through the process. I’m not even sure that the why will come out. For me, this is just the bottom of the pyramid, and we may never get there to understand the why and who.”

The State has indicated that at least 45 witnesses will be called to testify.

AKA and Motsoane were shot and killed on Durban’s popular Florida Road in February 2023.
