'Cat Matlala, co-accused trial-within-a-trial resumes

JOHANNESBURG - The attempted murder trial against Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his co-accused returns to court on Monday, with the trial-within-a-trial set to resume.

The State is expected to either close its case or call another witness.

The proceedings have centred on the circumstances surrounding the arrest of alleged hitman Musa Kekana in April 2024.

Last week, the spotlight was firmly on the conduct of police officers involved in the arrest.

The defence has accused police of tailoring their evidence and has questioned the credibility of their accounts of what happened that day.

Kekana, meanwhile, alleges that he was assaulted and suffocated by police during his arrest.

His lawyers are arguing that evidence obtained during and after the arrest should therefore be excluded from the main trial.
