It is believe that Matlala agreed to appear at the Commission on the condition that he is not cross-examined on the Medicare24 contract.

Matlala says this is because that matter is the subject of a plea deal with the NPA.

Matlala has turned state witness and pleaded guilty to fraud, corruption and money laundering charges linked to a R228 million SAPS tender.

Matlala, his team and the state had agreed on a 15-year imprisonment, which would be suspended for seven years. He would, essentially serve eight years in prison.
