Mkhwanazi and Lerutla face several charges, including fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

The state has not yet confirmed what sentence the accused could face should they be found guilty.

However, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said they would push for the harshest sentence.

He said the intention is not only a punishment but also a deterrent against those who commit a crime.

"The reason why people are punished it's not only to punish them but to also send a message out there that the kind of things they do are punishable," he explained.

The arrest stems from ongoing investigations and incriminating testimony at the Madlanga Commission.

According to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, the Madlanga Commission has become a critical tool in uncovering the truth about alleged corruption and infiltration.

In the same breath, she said the commission has become a platform to bring forward information of wrongdoing on allegations of corruption within the metros and law enforcement.

She added that the task team not only relies on evidence presented at the commission but also on additional charges where there has been wrongdoing and gross misconduct of officials.
