Planned water maintenance could deepen water divide - activists

JOHANNESBURG - As Rand Water embarks on its annual infrastructure repairs, activists warn of the deepening divide that water provision brings.

In Johannesburg, the maintenance begins on Friday morning and runs until Tuesday.

The work is expected to leave taps dry in many areas, including informal settlements.

Residents have been urged to stockpile or buy water ahead of the maintenance.

However, activists said the call is out of touch with residents’ reality.

Residents have welcomed repairs to the fragile water network, but questions remain about why they continue to bear the brunt of weak infrastructure.
