Sgt. Fannie Nkosi denies being Ze Nxumalo's '007'

PRETORIA - Sergeant Fannie Nkosi says he does not have a 'license to kill', like the James Bond character.

Testifying at the Madlanga Commission on Monday, Nkosi says that he goes by a variety of names, including the police hotline number, 10111, Knight Rider, and 007. All of these monikers are merely terms of endearment from people who know him.

It is these relations that came under scrutiny after it came to light that Nkosi had a close relationship with businessman Zenzile 'Zee' Nxumalo, who is accused of having influenced the arrest of blogger Musa Khawula.

He alleged that Khawula was trying to extort controversial businessman Vusimusi 'Cat' Matlala.

Nxumalo called Nkosi 007, the code for the fictional James Bond, who is a British secret agent who has a license to kill.

Nkosi said he was not familiar with the reference and only accepted the name as he was familiar with Nxumalo.

Nkosi, who is previously known as Witness F, chose to show his identity on Monday. This is despite alleged fears for his life. He also previously refused to testify for fear of incriminating himself.

He stands accused of sharing police information with alleged criminal cartel members. He has insisted that there was nothing unlawful in his actions.

He has also been quizzed about an arms deal between him and former deputy president David Mabuza's nephew.

Nkosi is also said to have close ties with Suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner for Crime Detection Shadrack Sibiya.

Sibiya said it was untrue that Nkosi worked under his command or worked as a middleman for the passing of money through him.

Nkosi was identified as a middleman between Sibiya and Matlala during Sibiya's testimony.

While conceding that he enjoyed a close relationship with Nkosi, Sibiya said he was not the only senior SAPS official with close ties to the witness.
