Municipal corruption | Calls for stronger oversight measures

JOHANNESBURG - The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has identified R1.1-billion lost to corruption across various municipalities.

Investigations in Tshwane, Johannesburg and eThekwini point to irregular tenders and poor oversight.

Recoveries remain low, raising concerns about accountability. 

Gauteng Infrastructure Development and COGTA MEC Jacob Mamabolo says he welcomes the investigations and their findings.

"It is a good sign, it should be welcomed because it will improve governance in our municipalities," he says.

Mamabolo says that this shows the difficulty in weakened governance in municipalities as well.

In Gauteng, Premier Panyaza Lesufi has introduced a local government turnaround strategy which, according to Mamabolo, will create a different environment for accountability.

The province will be introducing an automation system that will assist municipalities in performing oversight in their areas.
