Impala Platinum death toll rises to 13

JOHANNESBURG - The death toll following an accident at Impala Platinum's Rustenburg mine has risen to 13.

According to a statement issued by the company, a miner succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Sunday.

Of the over 80 miners who were involved in the accident, 23 have been discharged, and of the 50 that are still in hospital, 8 are in critical care.

The incident was allegedly caused by a problem with the shaft's lift system, that hoists workers up and down the underground shaft.

The company is expected to hold a memorial service to honour the workers who perished.
