Education inequality | EE says schools still lack proper structures, services

JOHANNESBURG - The latest provincial school infrastructure reports show some progress in delivery of schools’ infrastructure.

But, Equal Education says government is still not providing basic infrastructure like toilets and water.

It says it's failing miserably to comply with norms and standards for schools.

The organisation says deadlines are constantly being missed.

"What we’re seeing in rural provinces is that the backlogs of these three very very basic forms of infrastructure are lacking quite a bit, a lot of schools in provinces such as Limpopo and KZN struggle with pit latrine toilets to this very day," said Kim Khumalo.

"Although there is a court order that pushed the Limpopo Department of Education to start to get rid of pit toilets more timeously, their deadline that they had set for themselves was March 2023 and still we are seeing that schools that have pit toilets are still continuing with those way passed over their deadline."
