Enyobeni tavern owner accuses municipality of double standards

SCENERY PARK - The Enyobeni tavern's owners remain defiant their building won't be demolished.

This despite the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality seeking a court order to tear it down after it claimed renovations to the tavern where 21 young people died last year were done illegally.

The tavern is expected to be reduced to ruins on 31 August.

Siyakhangela Ndevu says the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality is clutching at straws.

He's convinced the municipality's plans to demolish his building are out of order.

Ndevu says he's if necessary, he'll sell his premises to the highest bidder.

Some Scenery Park residents have called for the tavern to be turned into a heritage site to remember the 21 young people that lost their lives.

However, the father of one of the deceased children is against that idea.

The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality says plans are still on track to demolish the building.

The owners of Enyobeni Tavern say they've received numerous offers to sell the building and they're willing to fight in court to stop it being destroyed.
