'It's a red flag': Police probe why Fannie Nkosi was in possession of dockets despite suspension

PRETORIA - Police have raised concern over the discovery of SAPS property in the possession of a suspended officer.

According to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, suspended police sergeant Fannie Nkosi was found with six case dockets and a large sum of cash exceeding R50,000.

Of those dockets five were original while one was a copy.

Mathe said while it is not unusual for a detective to have dockets, these should only relate to cases assigned to them.

She said in Nkosi’s case the situation is concerning, given that he was under suspension and should not have had access to any SAPS property.

“He was supposed to have handed in all these dockets. So that is quite a red flag as to why he would be in possession of SAPS property, which includes those dockets,” she said.

Mathe said authorities are investigating how Nkosi came to be in possession of the dockets, with police drawing all the dockets from their particular stations.

Nkosi appeared before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday where he faces charges of theft, defeating the ends of justice, possession of unlicensed ammunition and a hand grenade.

His bail application was moved to 13 April to allow the state to verify his bail information.

Nkosi remains behind bars until his next court appearance.

He was arrested on Friday after a raid on his Pretoria home, where police also seized case dockets among other items.

Nkosi is a member of the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit and testified before the Madlanga Commission where he implicated himself and senior police officials in alleged links to organised crime figures.
