Popcru calls for review of crime stats collection process

JOHANNESBURG - Police union Popcru does not believe the SAPS crime stats are accurate.

It says the collection and interpretation are off and the situation is actually far worse.

The union is calling for a complete overhaul of the system.

It's hosting its first-ever policing indaba aimed at improving law enforcement.

"In the statistics of crime, we’ve got flaws in data collection and methodology. Therefore, even as I have noted and discussed the crime stats, Popcru does not belive that these provided crime stats trends are accurate," said Popcru president Zizamele Cebekhulu-Makhaza.

"These figures are not aligned with the realities facing our members and communities, and the situation maybe even worse then indicated.

"There are several serious underlying issues and flaws in the data collection and methodology that must be addressed such as inaccurate data collected from each province."
