JOHANNESBURG - Financial abuse remains a major hindrance in the efforts to empower women and achieve gender parity. 

Surveys have revealed that at least one third of adults in the country have suffered some form of financial abuse.

Over thirty percent of South Africa's households are headed by women. 

Most victims of domestic violence have also been subjected to financial abuse.
