War in Ukraine | Analyst says African peace mission was in vain
JOHANNESBURG - Political analyst Sandile Swana says the Ukraine peace mission did not achieve any of its objectives.
That's after President Cyril Ramaphosa hailed the visit to Ukraine and Russia as a success.
He led a group of seven African leaders to offer a roadmap to peace.
"This war must be settled... through negotiations and through diplomatic means," Ramaphosa said.
But Swana said the countries are prepared to continue fighting.
"Zelensky on the side of the Ukrainians actually made ridiculous demands and basically nipped the peace process in the bud. Similarly, Putin did the same thing," he said.
"But from Ramaphosa's perspective, specifically, yes he tried to clean himself to show that he's neutral, he's calling for peace for so on and so forth.
"But that does not help him much because the US and NATO generally are still going to impose whatever sanctions please them against South Africa."
