In today’s episode, Eskom has received ministerial approval to split into multiple independent entities in a long-awaited overhaul of South Africa’s power system. One unit will operate power stations, another will distribute electricity, and the new National Transmission Company will run the grid. A separate renewable arm, Eskom Green, will focus on clean-energy expansion. Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says an independent system operator is already provided for under the amended electricity regulation framework and will help create a more reliable and affordable electricity supply.

The search for the country’s next National Director of Public Prosecutions continues, with Western Cape DPP Nicolette Bell the first candidate to be interviewed. Meanwhile, a court battle is underway over how much power private funders should wield in school governance. Western Cape MEC David Maynier argues that schools backed by external funders often outperform others, but Equal Education and Sadtu insist funders should not dictate operations. Both organisations are appealing the High Court’s ruling at the Supreme Court of Appeal.
