eNCA News Bite | Feroz Khan, Beitbridge explosives and Bafana pride | 29 June 2026

It’s Monday, 29 June, and this is News Bite with Marcelle Gordon.

Crime Intelligence Deputy Head Feroz Khan has been shot in Houghton, Johannesburg, days before he was expected to testify at the Madlanga Commission. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

At the Madlanga Commission, businessman and self-proclaimed police informant Tumelo Nku is back in the hot seat. He says alleged underworld boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala was known as “John Wick.”

Acting Police Minister Feroz Cachalia is promising public safety ahead of the unlawful 30 June deadline set by anti-illegal immigration groupings.

At Beitbridge, the Border Management Authority has intercepted explosive cables worth R100,000 on a bus from Malawi. They were hidden in a bag of rice, and a Malawian national has been arrested.

The BMA says it has processed more than 25,000 migrants for deportation and repatriation. Malawians in Durban have been moved to a temporary centre in Musina, while Zimbabweans in Cape Town have been relocated to the Epping Home Affairs Repatriation Centre.

In Gauteng, an internal probe has uncovered 41 serious corruption and financial mismanagement cases in public schools. Education MEC Lebogang Maile says the findings point to a structural crisis.

SARS auto-assessments begin this week, but taxpayers are being warned not to accept notifications too quickly, as third-party data may be incomplete.

The National Arts Festival is underway in Makhanda until 5 July, with organisers saying service delivery problems and migration tensions have not dampened its message of hope.

In other news we’re keeping an eye on, Brown Mogotsi has again been denied bail, and the United States and Iran have agreed to stop attacks after Hormuz tensions.

Hugo Broos says South Africa should be proud of Bafana Bafana after their World Cup exit against Canada. The Proteas Women face England in a T20 World Cup semi-final, while George Russell has won the Austrian Grand Prix.

And finally, between commission drama, explosive cables in rice, tax warnings and Bafana pride, today’s News Bite is giving paperwork, pressure and whiplash.

That’s your News Bite for 29 June.
