The family of 38-year-old Celani Zungu is demanding justice after he was run over by a water tanker in Adams Mission, KwaZulu-Natal. Residents have been without running water for months since infrastructure was damaged in the 2022 floods. Zungu was allegedly trying to stop a delivery to one household and demand water for the wider community. KZN police are investigating culpable homicide and taking eyewitness statements.
At the Madlanga Commission, IDAC Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Peter Serunye has contradicted Andrea Johnson, insisting she never selected a team for him. State Advocate Drushantha Ramsamy is expected to testify later.
A police raid at Badirile Secondary School in Khutsong has uncovered knives, scissors, vapes, a panga and drugs. Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile says ten serious pupil-related cases have been reported since January and warns that anarchy will not be tolerated.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has declared a formal dispute with national government over the devolution of policing powers. He says the city will approach the courts if mediation fails, arguing Metro Police and LEAP officers have stronger investigative capacity.
Fuel prices change at midnight. Petrol will decrease, but diesel will rise again, with economists warning that higher diesel costs could feed into road freight, electricity generation and broader prices.
In India, the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party has suspended protests after the Education Minister resigned, but opposition lawmakers and students are continuing demonstrations over alleged examination irregularities.
In other news we’re keeping an eye on, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says a successful M72 tuberculosis vaccine could create jobs, expand South Africa’s pharmaceutical sector and position the country as a global supplier. The US-led Board of Peace says Israeli forces will remain in Gaza until Hamas is fully disarmed. Hamas has rejected the deal but remains committed to the ceasefire.
