Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber admits repatriation centres may not be adequate as deportation and voluntary-return operations continue after the 30 June deadline. The Border Management Authority says Beitbridge is seeing more foreign nationals heading home.
In Cape Town, hundreds of Zimbabwean nationals remain stranded at the Epping repatriation centre, with fears that more foreign nationals may join the camp.
Nigeria is demanding compensation from South Africa, claiming its nationals abandoned businesses, homes and property. More than 600 Nigerians have reportedly been repatriated.
Bafana Bafana returned to a hero’s welcome after their historic World Cup run, reaching the knockout round for the first time. Fans gathered at OR Tambo.
Former president Jacob Zuma has been seen in India with Ajay Gupta, saying he was visiting his “brother and friend”. The Gupta brothers remain wanted over alleged state capture-era corruption.
After nearly 28 years in the DRC, South Africa’s military mission has ended. Defence analyst Ricardo Teixeira says peace objectives were not reached. President Cyril Ramaphosa is also in the DRC on an African Union mission on Ebola.
About 1.7 million vehicles in South Africa may be affected by the Takata airbag recall. The Automobile Association has launched a campaign for free safety checks.
