A major legal victory for housing justice leads today’s episode. The Constitutional Court has ruled against the Western Cape provincial government over the sale of the state-owned Tafelberg property in Sea Point, finding government acted unlawfully. Ndifuna Ukwazi is calling it a landmark win for affordable homes close to work and opportunity.
In KwaZulu-Natal, government is rolling out compliance inspections aimed at employers hiring undocumented migrants. Premier Thami Ntuli says employers who disregard immigration laws are adding to community tensions.
The Casual Workers Advice Office says some food-sector employers are dismissing migrant workers without proper labour procedures. Meanwhile, Malawian nationals remain stranded at Musina Showgrounds near Beitbridge, awaiting Home Affairs verification.
Government has criticised former president Jacob Zuma’s trip to India, where he was seen meeting fugitive Ajay Gupta. International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola says the visit is being investigated after South Africa’s High Commissioner to India appeared with Zuma.
BUSA says the Unemployment Insurance Fund is failing workers when they need it most. BUSA says governance failures continue despite years of engagement with the Department of Employment and Labour.
Internationally, the World Food Programme says Venezuela’s twin earthquakes may have left a higher human cost than official figures suggest. In Northern Nigeria, 17 million people face severe hunger as conflict and funding shortages deepen.
In other news we’re keeping an eye on, Jaguar Land Rover South Africa has announced a second vehicle recall this week, affecting selected 2024 to 2027 models.
And OpenAI has proposed giving the U.S. government a 5% stake in the company.
SPORT
At the World Cup, Algeria is out after losing 2-0 to Switzerland, while Spain beat Austria 3-0. Back home, Hugo Broos says Bafana Bafana must build on their World Cup success ahead of Afcon qualifiers.
The Proteas Women’s T20 World Cup campaign ended with a 40-run semi-final defeat to England.
And finally, Springbok season has arrived. Manie Libbok will wear number 10 against England at Ellis Park, and ticket prices have been dropped after slow sales.
