2024 elections | Pandor pans DA for election observation request

JOHANNESBURG - The DA's letter to the US asking for help with observing South Africa's upcoming elections has caused outrage.

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor criticised the letter, calling it a weak attempt at electioneering.

"It’s interesting that after this letter became public, the DA suddenly went AWOL and we have not heard any further comments of explanation as to what has been asked for and what particular aspects could be asked for from the United States," Pandor said.

"As I recall, the letter asks the United States to provide money for the securing of what is termed independent observers.

"Now I think that is somehow an insult because of the implication is the African Union, the EU and all the other observers are now independent including the fact that South Africa accredits all ambassadors representing their countries."
