Accused number nine, meanwhile, Thamsanqa Mgwetyana and the last suspect, Isaac Plaatjies, have been denied bail. Plaatjies is believed to be the mastermind behind several attacks against senior staff at the institution.

Plaatjies says that since he started investigating politicians linked to alleged corruption and academic fraud at the University of Fort Hare – he’s made enemies.

The institution’s Head of Investigations and Vetting Services wanted to speak to eNCA shortly after court was adjourned but was barred by police.

In delivering his judgment, Magistrate Zwelethu Ngethu described Plaatjies as a dangerous and dishonest man.

The 56-year-old’s family was in court to hear the verdict.

Ngethu said, “I am of the view that his release may put the lives of other people in danger. Namely, the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the investigators as well as witnesses. Based on the evidence before me, I am of the view that he's a dangerous and dishonest person.”

Plaatjies and nine other accused will be back in court on Wednesday.
