Ellerines founder, Eric Ellerine, dies at age 90

JOHANNESBURG Ellerines founder, Eric Ellerine, has died at the age of 90.

He passed away Monday morning

Ellerine founded the Ellerine Furniture Company in 1950.

He opened his first store at the age of 16 in Johannesburg Cyrildene and two years later, his now late brother Sydney, joined as co-founder.

In 1969, the retail chain was listed on the JSE.

Over the years, it expanded to Ellerine Holdings, a furniture retail company,

encompassing other well-known brands such as Beares, Dial-a-Bed, Furniture City,

Geen & Richards and Wetherlys.

In 2007, African Bank Investments bought Ellerines for R10.6 billion.
