It’s Friday, 10 July, and this is News Bite with Marcelle Gordon.

An Eastern Cape court says there is evidence supporting criminal prosecution over the Enyobeni tavern tragedy. The 2022 “pens down” party claimed 21 young lives, including a 13-year-old. Families are demanding tougher enforcement of laws preventing minors from accessing alcohol.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says Treasury’s funding freeze on 69 municipalities will also extend to provincial and national departments that fail to pay municipal bills. Funding withheld from 29 municipalities will be reinstated next week.

In the United States, Portia Anyamba has been sentenced to six months in prison for acting as an unregistered foreign agent for South Africa. Officials say the former SA Air Force general lied about her connections while seeking security clearance at a US Energy Department facility.

The Madlanga Commission has turned to the Independent Directorate Against Corruption. Retired Hawks investigator Kobus Roelofse alleged interference by IDAC head Andrea Johnson in a complaint involving Crime Intelligence boss Feroz Khan.

Former Ekurhuleni City Manager Imogen Mashazi and suspended HR head Linda Gxasheka have been granted R50,000 bail. Malusi Gigaba’s corruption case has been postponed to 23 October.

Drama in the AmaZulu Royal household has gone viral after Queen Mam’Yeni filmed King Misuzulu kaZwelithini confronting her and threatening to cut off her funding. The king’s spokesperson says households have issues.

In other news we’re keeping an eye on, SAMWU members marched to Treasury demanding salary protection, a new Local Government Equitable Share formula and higher municipal allocations.

SPORT

France beat Morocco 2-0 to reach a third successive World Cup semi-final, while Spain face Belgium next. SAFA has rejected reports that Hugo Broos has left Bafana Bafana. Rassie Erasmus will set a record with his 55th Test as head coach against Scotland. Faf de Klerk says his Cheetahs move is about staying competitive, while Linda Noskova faces Karolina Muchova in the Wimbledon final.

And finally, Turkey’s president gave NATO leaders engraved revolvers and six bullets. Canada’s prime minister joked that his maple syrup felt underpowered.
