The Madlanga Commission is facing fresh questions over whether EFF leader Julius Malema could be called to testify. Witness M wants to testify in camera over safety fears, while evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson unpacked messages allegedly linking Mo Sayed, General Feroz Khan and former Crime Intelligence officials.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels says questions around Julius Malema are now before the inquiry, while Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is expected to appear on 15 July.
President Cyril Ramaphosa says he will consider extending the inquiry if the Madlanga Commission asks.
Police are questioning one person over the death of former police general Sindile Mfazi. His 2021 death is now being treated as a murder investigation after raids in Gauteng.
The Public Protector has found the City of Cape Town guilty of maladministration over service failures in Khayelitsha and Langa, including water, sewer and waste problems.
Siyafana Sonke Action Campaign says maladministration, not migrant patients, is behind South Africa’s public healthcare crisis. The group warns against blaming undocumented migrants for crowded clinics.
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube says pit latrines have been removed from more than 3,000 schools, but the project is not complete.
In other news we’re keeping an eye on, Treasury is withholding funds from 69 municipalities over fiscal discipline failures.
Convicted Czech crime boss Radovan Krejcir is back in court over delays in his outstanding criminal cases.

At the World Cup, Belgium dumped Team USA out with a 4-1 win after the Folarin Balogun red-card controversy. Belgium now faces Spain, which beat Portugal 1-0.
Tonight, Mo Salah’s Egypt face Argentina, while the Springboks meet Scotland with 10 changes and Embrose Papier starting alongside Handré Pollard.
And finally, Jasmine Paolini is into the Wimbledon quarter-finals, with Roger Federer watching from Centre Court.
