Protest against CoCT electricity tariff hikes

CAPE TOWN - Cape Town residents are gearing up to protest against electricity price hikes.

The City is implementing a substantial 17.6 percent tariff increase.

The move is being met with resistance from opposition parties and civil society.

Cosatu says it tried to talk to mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, but their pleas were ignored.

"We have tried to engage the City of Cape Town to find common ground in terms of the issue on the table, because this is affecting your ordinary person on the ground," said Cosatu's Motlatsi Tsubane.

"We will be meeting with social activists as well as civil society and that is just the beginning."
