It’s Monday, 6 July, and this is News Bite with Marcelle Gordon.

Today marks one year since Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s press conference opened claims of political and cartel infiltration in the police. The Madlanga Commission is hearing evidence linked to suspended deputy Crime Intelligence boss Feroz Khan, WhatsApp exchanges and a break-in at journalist Marianne Thamm’s home.

Alleged cartel boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala will not appear before the commission on Tuesday, despite a subpoena. Evidence leaders asked for a deferral.

The Epping repatriation centre has closed, with stranded migrants told to approach diplomatic offices. The SA Human Rights Commission is pleading for temporary shelter.

In Durban, another closed repatriation centre is still drawing Zimbabweans, Mozambicans and Malawians, with Gift of the Givers assisting.

In Ratanda, two people were killed during water outage protests and 15 protesters were arrested. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi promised water would be restored.

ActionSA wants an overhaul of the City of Joburg’s finances ⁠after the forced closure of Thuso House over a R3.4-million debt.

The Health Department saysLenacapavir uptake shows communities are embracing the twice-yearly HIV prevention drug. More than 16,000 people have received it.

In the US, Donald Trump marked the 4th of July and America’s 250 years of independence with attacks on democratic socialist candidates.

In other news we’re keeping an eye on, suspected robbers and hijackers accused of posing as police officers have been arrested in Devon. A man was also arrested at Cape Town International Airport with 50kg of Khat.

SPORT

The biggest World Cup talking point is FIFA’s decision to overturn US striker Folarin Balogun’s red-card suspension after a reported Trump appeal. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia called it April Fool’s Day.

On the field, Norway stunned Brazil, with Erling Haaland scoring twice, while England beat Mexico 3-2. Neymar has called time on his Brazil career.

Australia won the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, and Charles Leclerc won the British GP after Max Verstappen crashed late.

And finally, when Trump calls, FIFA checks the calendar, finds April Fool’s Day in July, and keeps moving.
