ANC celebrates 114 years, US arrests Maduro, SA's coasts burning

President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the ANC's January Statement on Saturday at Moruleng Stadium in Rustenburg, North West.

The party is celebrating its 114th birthday and Ramaphosa has once again, preached organisational renewal.

The ANC says its anniversary renews its energy and commitment to serve South Africans and honour its founding legacy.

In the week, Ramaphosa went door-to-door in the week visiting residents in the area.

Advocate Andy Mothibi has been appointed the new National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).

His appointment  comes into effect on 1 February 2026, following Shamila Batohi's retirement at the end of Johannesburg.

Mothibi is currently head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and brings experience as a public prosecutor, magistrate and senior legal executive. Leonard Lekgetho has been appointed acting head of the SIU, to fill the vacancy left by Mothibi.

Ramaphosa explained that he introduced public interviews (at the time Batohi was hired) for transparency.

This time around, the six candidates were, according to the interview panel, not suitable for the role.

This resulted in the President appointing an NDPP on his own in line with his Constitutional powers. 

 

In a stunning turn of events, the US invaded Venezuela on Saturday, arresting its leader, Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores.

The pair appeared in a New York court on charges of narco-terrorism where they pleaded not guilty.

The invasion and arrest has shaken the world, with countries, including South Africa calling it an infringement of International Law.

Maduro's vice-president, Delcy Rodriguez is currently acting president, despite Trump saying the US will 'run' the country and its oil resources; money from which will be managed by Trump. Allegedly to benefit America and Venezuela.

The two-year-old stabbed, allegedly, by a babysitter in Jeffrey's Bay's recovery is miraculous, according to doctors.

She appeared at the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court and her matter has been postponed to 12 January.

She faces charges of child neglect and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Strong winds have been fanning fires across the Western Cape, forcing official to call on locals to evacuate.

More fires broke out in Stanford and the Du Noon informal settle on Friday.

This adds pressure on the province that has been fighting fires in Mossel Bay since Monday.

Nearly 2,000 hectares have been destroyed in the area and crews remain on high alert, tackling flare-ups as they arise.

No deaths have been reported yet as authorities assess the fire damage.

On Thursday, Kouga authorities issued evacuation orders as fires broke out in the area 

Twelve half-naked boys were rescued in Mulbarton on Tuesday.

According to Gauteng Hawks spokesperson, Katlego Mogale, JMPD officers were on patrol in Mulbarton when they were alerted about eight half-naked boys seen walking along a street.

The boys, believed to be foreign nationals, were unable to speak English.

A 47-year-old was arrested and appeared at the Booysens Magistrate's Court on Thursday. The matter was postponed to Friday as a translator was sought.

The man is said to be legally in the country and has been staying here for over 20-years.

The boys are believed to be as young as 15, however, Mogale says once translation services are sorted, their real ages can be determined.
